Advocating For The Birth You Want

mindset mom life pregnancy Aug 11, 2021

Advocacy is defined 'as supporting the birthing person in their right to make decisions about their own body and baby'.

One of the BEST things you can do for yourself and your child is to be your own health and wellness advocate.  Although pregnancy may be new to you, it is important to learn as much as possible.  No one knows you, your body, your family, or your baby better than you.  No one knows what works for you, motivates you, or inspires you better than you.

Be strong and confident in your beliefs and advocate for your health, wellness, and the choices that come along with making medical decisions throughout pregnancy.

Creating a birth plan can help educate you on the birthing process AND the gives you a way to advocate for yourself.

Being able to mindfully prepare for birth is extremely important. Having a solid support team on your side can help you answer any burning questions or anxieties you may have about the pregnancy and birthing processes.

Although we can plan for anything we want, baby is going to do what baby is going to do and you are along for the ride. If you start to adjust your expectations during pregnancy, you will get great practice on keeping them low once baby arrives.  You will not be able to do all of the things all of the time – that is okay!  Do not set your expectations so high that you let yourself down.

Checking in with your doctor or midwife to brainstorm safe and effective ways to manage your mindfulness is very important.  If you are feeling off or not yourself, seek help from a professional to get you back on track.

Self-advocacy is the first step in taking charge of your medical choices for you and baby during the pregnancy and birth process.
